Under PSIRA’s rules:
- Security Officer Requirements: Certified in Grade E, D & C
- You Cannot Skip Grades or Levels
- Each Grade Takes a Minimum of One Week To Complete
- Each Grade Takes One Week To Be Processed By PSIRA
Once the Processing is completed and the Learners Grading Level appears on PSIRA’s website the Learner may follow the application procedure to apply for their PSIRA Certificate and ID card.

HOW TO APPLY FOR COMPETENCY.
Process in getting a license.
The process of getting a license consists of three steps.
- Practical training at an accredited center like Tshwane Skills Training.
- Competency application with the Police.
- On receiving the competency an application for the license can be done with the South African Police services.
Competency training is offered at accredited firearm training centers like Tshwane Skills Training.
The process is as follows:
- Payment and registration will take place at the Tshwane Skills Training as registration documents need to be completed.
- At registration the training material will be issued applicable to the firearm type the student would like to license (Handgun, shotgun or rifle).
- Once registration is completed the student will have to complete the Self-study portion at home.
- Most students take two weeks to complete the Self-study.
- Once the Self-Study is completed the student will then contact the training center to make an appointment for their assessment.
- On the day of assessment, the student will attend a lecture on the self-study material they covered and also participate in a practical session.
- In the practical session the student will be taught how to handle the firearm safely and also be taught how to fire the firearm accurately.
- Once the Instructor is happy with the students handling of the firearm a qualification shoot will be done and the closed book test will be done.
On successful completion the Tshwane Skills Training will award the student the competency training certificates, and the application can then be done at the police.

- The applicant must be a South African citizen.
- The applicant must be 21 years of age or older (unless there are compelling reasons for the person to obtain competency for a firearm license)
Below is a list of documentation that you will need to supply with your firearm license application.
Prepare copies beforehand as most SAPS offices do not have facilities to make copies of your documents.
- SAP 271 application form.
- 2 x copies of identity document.
- 2 x full color passport size photos.
- Proof of residential address.
- Copy of training certificates; SASSETA or statement of results.
- Copy of current relevant competency certificate.
- Section 15 – Occasional hunter/Sport shooter: 2 X hunting/sport letters.
- Section 16 – Dedicated hunter/Sport shooter: Copies of valid section 16 status.
- Section 16- Endorsement for the applicable firearm from shooting club.
- 2 x Clear color photographs of the safe in which you will be storing the firearm.
- A motivation per license application.
- R140 cash per license application.
- Any additional documentation that supports your application.
How do I get a Firearm license?
- The process of attaining a FIREARM license in SA consists of 2 phases, TRAINING and APPLICTION
Can I complete the Firearm training in one day?
- Yes REGISTRATION PREPERATION PRACTICAL and EXAMINATION classes are done at Tshwane Firearm Training on Wednesdays starting at 09h00 and ending at 17h00, booking is essential.
How does the SAPS License process work?
APPICATION is broken into 2 STEPS:
- POLICE Clearance or POLICE COMPETENCY, which certifies the person as fit to own a firearm under the firearms control act and only needs to be done once per firearm type and MUST be renewed every 5 years regardless of the state of your firearm license.
- LICENSE to possess the firearm in question.
What is the Difference between Competency and License?
- Police Competency is for you, which means you are found competent by South African Police Service to possess and operate a Firearm, there are 4 types of Firearms, and you need a competency for each one to be able to apply for the Firearm license.
- Firearm License is for each of the Firearms you own or operate, which means for every firearm you wish to own or operate, you must apply for a license for that firearm.
How long does the Competency and Licensing Take?
- it takes a minimum of 6 weeks for the competency and then a minimum of 6 weeks for the License. But it can take up to 12 months for each individually.
Is there a way to speed up the process?
- No, the process cannot be sped up.
